When looking at Susy Cyclewear kit you first notice how simple yet stylish and flattering their kit is. Susy’s minimal approach to design and function is what makes the brand stand out as “less is more”. A reminder that not all women want to wear high-vis colors, cute or funky patterns, or bib shorts, so it’s a relief when a cycle wear brand comes on the scene with performance apparel that’s more subtle and versatile whilst still being comfortable to ride in.
Late summer in New York can be very muggy and wearing less is more of a necessity, giving me the perfect opportunity to test Susy Cyclewears Spinning Sleeveless Cycling Jersy and Susy Cycle Shorts. The jersey’s blue marble color pattern matches the brands Susy cycling shorts which is versatile whether you’re riding outside or in your spin class.
Launched in 2015, Dutch cyclewear brand, Susy, set out to design and produce high quality cycle wear with the aim of getting you from your home, onto the bike, to work and the gym. To ensure each piece is created with impeccable attention to detail, Susy carefully sources recycled and technical fabrics that are tested and performs their purpose.
Susy Sleeveless Marble Print Jersey
Perfect for summer weather, this sleeveless jersey addresses the issue with cycling tan lines that some may be opposed to. For those who need extra protection on more sensitive parts but still want sleeveless exposure, the fabric it’ is made of SPF 50+ protection. You will want to add layers of sunscreen and reapply throughout if you’re out in the sun for long hours while getting your vitamin D on your ride.
The light blue marble color jersey is constructed with two way stretch fabrics, made from 60% polyester, 29% polyamide, 11% elastane. It’s comfortably form fitting but doesn’t restrict your movement as you ride. Light and quick wicking, with touches like a front half zipper I found myself very comfortable and using it without any issues. I loved having the front zip to open the jersey when I wanted more breathability.
Ot the back of the jersey, there are three cargo pockets for storage with a zipped stash pocket for essential items. I’m really used to having three back pockets and usually find it difficult to put my hands in them with gloves on so I appreciated having two larger panel pockets and a larger zip for those essentials that I don’t want falling out of pockets. If you’re someone who uses your jersey pockets for snacks and phone storage, you won’t find yourself trying to force your hand in or shoving your phone into the pocket, as it just slides in. Such a bonus!
The centre back length is approximately 5 cm longer, providing ample coverage when you’re really pedaling down hard. A silicone band on the back hem keeps the jersey in place, keeping it from riding up your back.
Susy Cycle Shorts
To complete the look, these Susy cycling shorts keeping with the same black and sky-blue theme.
These short are developed with a heavenly integrated 3D chamois pad which has been designed with the female anatomy in mind. The lightweight compression fabric offers muscular support with a soft finish that keeps you cool and dry throughout your ride and workout session.
These shorts are extremely comfortable to wear and to ride in. The high-waist and thick panel construct ensures there is minimal pressure cutting in through the mid-drift. I found these tights great to ride in and flattering while maintaining their fit and performance.
The short leg bands don’t squeeze or leave you with sausage leg. Rather they look sleek and form fitting. At the back of the tights, there is a small zipped stash pocket and subtle reflective detailing for low-light conditions.
Verdict
It’s apparent that Susy’s sleeveless cycle jersey and cycling short have been designed with style and function in mind. Both garments are comfortable to wear, perform well while riding and their simple design and color ensure you can either cycle outside or to spin class in style.
My only issue are the cycling shorts elastic waistband around the hips. I wasn’t completely uncomfortable but at times I did have stomach discomfort with squeezing around my waist. I personally have a sensitive digestive tract when snacking and cycling so I would like to see a softer waistband to address this. As you can see, I’m a soft core squishy woman and while many women out there cycling aren’t stick thin figured, this may be an issue if you’re sensitive about muffin top or body curves being exaggerated.
Granted it’s been very humid in NY, the issue of humidity and sweat wicking can be a problem for any cycling kit. The only worry about this issue is for the potential build up of bacteria but I have not had any issues with the chamois so that’s a bonus for its performance.
Note that when ordering from Susy Cyclewear it’s best to consult with their team on sizing as U.S. sizes are very different from Dutch sizes. If you’re petite like me, you may want to go down another size on the jersey since it’s designed to be longer on the back for coverage.
Overall, I personally think Susy Cyclewear kit looks and feels high quality but this does come at a price. Good kit is a worthwhile investment and I wouldn’t say it’s the most affordable cyclewear on the market, but compared to other lux cycle wear brands, I think Susy offers high-quality cycling kit ideal for urban, commuting and fitness. It’s versatility is everything!
