So, you’re a regular at Rapha. You follow KitFit on Instagram. And you’re pretty much a walking talking advertisement for Pas Normal Studio’s. But apart from the major street cred you’re gaining from rocking the latest cycling luxe threads on the gram or road, do you actually know about the benefits of good quality cycling kit?
On Wednesday, I gave you a look into kit fabrics and their function in the elements. Cycling activewear technology has come a long way when it comes to anti-wicking, cool dry fabrics and antibacterial control but the benefits go way beyond the technical. I believe that good quality, lasting cycling kit is an investment, one that will not only improve your comfort and performance but also your attitude to ride. So in case you needed any more excuses to find motivation to conquer the elements this winter, I’ve put a little list together to justify your next #newkitday purchase.
Lasts Longer
Good quality activewear is made from the best quality fabric that will withstand regular washes. Sweat patches, chamois wear, movements that stretch the material of your clothes, and with so much usage overall, having cycle kit that can handle all of this is essential so that you can avoid having to invest in new kit every few months. Your return of investment (ROI) should be noticeable in the fabrics, threading, function, and overall comfort on your ride.
Boosts performance
Good cycling kit is made with technical fabric that is there to help you regulate your body temperature in every element more easily so that you can feel cooler or warmer in a shorter time span (when you are hammering out in very warm temperatures especially.) Technical fabrics are also quick drying, unlike normal clothes made with materials such as cotton, which will absorb the sweat and soak the heck out of your socks, shorts, or jersey.
Fits well
Different body shapes and exercises require different active gear. Cycling kit is made with particular movement in mind, so it’s important that kit fits correctly, especially when it comes to short/bib shorts and jersey’s. Luckily, good quality cycling brands pride themselves on gear that is made with just the right amount of stretch and support so you’re sure find the best products for your body.
Prevents injuries
Don’t risk chaffing, infections, odor, or clothing getting stuck in chains, brakes, or wheels. The right gear for your ride will save you in the long run and you’ll also be able to enjoy your mileage without pesky baggy t-shirts getting in the way of grabbing your bidon for a swig or something getting caught in your brake while you’re trying to break your descending record!
You’ll look and feel great.
If a hot pair of cycling tights and curve fitting jersey is what it takes to get you on the road, then put it on! Sometimes we all need a little motivation and looking good generally means you’ll feel great too and can start working towards your goals one pedal at a time.

This next month, I’m going to change our January focus from goals and motivation towards women’s cycling brands, our purchase power, and how our influence can change the cycling industry. If we want change, we need to put our dollar where it matters.
