I do the majority of my cycling alone. Actually, most women do their cycling alone. A 2016 survey Strava did shared with us that while majority of women prefer to ride solo, however, would like to be part of a cycling group. If you’re one of these, maybe it’s factors such as convenience, inexperience, fear of getting dropped, not looking like a cyclists, etc are barriers for you to join a group? But maybe there isn’t a cycling club or group ride where you live. If you’ve been thinking about starting one or joining one, I’ve created this downloadable guide on How To Start A Women’s Cycling Club to help you get started.
Whatever the reason for starting a group ride, the benefits are priceless. And maybe it’s something your community needs. Cycling clubs have long held a boys club only reputation as being unwelcoming, fast paced, risk taking, and competitive – but that needn’t be the case. Joining a group ride or cycling club provides access to routes, riding skills and maintenance skills so that you can ride and have fun doing what you love with others.
With growing numbers of women getting on the saddle, thanks to initiatives like Cyclofemme and Rapha’s Women’s 100, women are creating cycling clubs to recreate the camaraderie of riding in a group and clubs now have specific women’s rides as part of their schedules. For many women, knowing this is enough and will hopefully give more women access to a cycling community.
